Human Rights and the Arts: Amnesty International Performance Evening 'The New Spring Without FGM'

In 2014 Val produced a combined arts performance evening in collaboration with Amnesty International Creative Writers Group around the subject of FGM. The evening included a performance by Madeline Oaten and Tony Hasnath of Val's prose poem First Love, a tragedy about cultural misunderstanding. Also included in the evening were readings by Qudrat Khan, Madeline, Tony, and Val from contemporary Arab literature written on FGM, Talks against FGM were given by Yvette Robbin-Coker from Forward and Jennette Arnold AM OBE. Following the performances and talks, a discussion with the audience was chaired by David Maidment 0BE.

This evening developed the company's relationship with Forward, one of the leading organisations in the UK working against FGM. We look forward to working with them on this issue in the future, as well as continuing the work with Amnesty.
