'The Quilt' by Valerie Doulton

The premiere performance of Val's play The Quilt was staged at The Bear and Staff Theatre in Leicester Square. The play features the sewing of a quilt as a way of processing grief. The cast for this performance was Lala Lloyd and Barbara Atkinson. Lala performed this role at The Actors' Centre as her retirement performance from the stage after a long and successful career. Among those who sent congratulations for her retirement performance were Peter Brook

In 2007 Val was proud to stage The Quilt at The National Portrait Gallery in conjunction with the season of events commemorating the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade in Britain. The history of quilting is profoundly associated with ancient cultures and woman's creativity. One theory links this art form to slaves who created quilts coded with patterns to help one another flee to freedom. To find out more about the secret language of Quilts, see the article below.

The cast for the NPG performance was Yvonne Bonnamy and Jean Haywood. The same cast also performed in Guy's hospital chapel, to raise money for the Stroke Assosiation in memory of Val's mother.

The music for all performances was Beim Schlafengehen by Richard Strauss, sung on recording by Jessye Norman.
